DIY solutions
First, we’re going to tell you about a couple of do-it-yourself solutions you can use to try and get rid of the odor coming from your ducts.
Since it’s summer, you can pretty much guarantee that the fault of the smell lies with your air conditioner!
- The first thing you want to do is check your air filter. We hope you change your air filter regularly! But just in case you don’t, know that a dirty air filter can produce some very unpleasant smells in your home!
- If your air filter is new and clean, another DIY solution is to put a bit of baking soda in your air ducts. When we say that, we literally mean, put a dish or the whole box of baking soda in your air duct and let it sit there. (The same way that you would place a box of baking soda in an offensive-smelling fridge.)
Tech solutions
It’s possible that you won’t be able to eliminate the odor yourself because the problem is a dirty evaporator coil or a dirty condensate line.
While you can put a little bit of white vinegar in your condensate line in order to prevent it from clogging and causing odors … it’s one of those things that if you’re not 100% sure how to do it, it’s safer to call in the professionals!
An HVAC technician can professionally clean your evaporator coils and unclog your condensate line.
On the contrary, if your air conditioner is in perfect working order, but you’re still smelling something off, another layer of protection is a whole-home air purifier or a UV air purifier. Both of these purifiers do a great job of removing small odor-causing particles.
