Furnace Checklist for Winter

Furnace

As the cool days of fall become the chilly days of winter, it’s time to schedule a tune-up for your furnace. The earlier the better, as you’ll want your Raleigh area home’s heating system to be ready to handle the demands of these colder temperatures, while you still stay comfortable.  Below are some tips to get your furnace and home ready for the upcoming winter.

  • Replace your HVAC filter. This simple task offers some big benefits! In fact, it could save you up to 15% on your heating bills and maximize the life of your furnace, according to Angie’s List. A dirty air filter makes your system work harder to keep you warm (or cool), wasting energy in the process. A clean filter will keep the dust and dirt from building up in your system, which left unchecked can lead to expensive maintenance as well as early system failure.
  • Seal air leaks. According to ENERGY STARTM, sealing air leaks, as well as adding some insulation, can save you up to 10% on your energy bills. Places to look for leaks in your home are around drafty windows, areas around doors where weather tripping has worn off and gaps around plumbing lines and chimneys.
  • Remove obstructions. Keep vents clear of any objects such as furniture, rugs, plants, toys, etc.  A blocked vent causes your system to work harder and less efficiently.  You also want to make sure the area around your furnace is kept clean and accessible in order to perform maintenance or in case of an emergency.
  • Check batteries of home safety devices. Once a year you should test and change the batteries on your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure proper functioning. Heading into winter is the perfect time to inspect these devices.
  • Schedule maintenance of your furnace. Annual maintenance on your furnace not only ensures your comfort but also keeps your system running safely and efficiently, day after day.
