4 Times You Should Call a Pro

Plumbing DIY

In a world filled with projects, DIY sites, blogs and online tutorials, many of us stand to save a significant amount of money and learn a valuable skill or two by rolling up our sleeves and doing it ourselves.  Many small plumbing projects are well-suited for the do it yourselfer and we are thrilled you’re taking an interest in your plumbing.  However, some projects, no matter how easy they seem, are just best left to a pro.  Here is a simple cheat sheet to follow.  If your answer is ‘yes’ to any of the following, save yourself the time and possible additional money and just give us a call.

Is a permit required?

Think of your plumbers like super skilled masters of permits and pipes, sporting cool toolbelts and handy shoe covers, and you’ve got the right idea.  Your plumber will understand the process of building codes and knows when a permit is required and will ensure your job passes inspection.  Anytime you are installing new or moving existing plumbing, such as with a bath or kitchen remodel, or adding a gas line, a permit is likely needed.  Save yourself a headache and partner with a licensed, reputable company before getting started.

Is the water heater involved?

It is simply not recommended to work on the water heater without proper knowledge or guidance.  Many things can go wrong while working on your water heater, and you could make the leak worse or cause additional damage.  Avoid having to replace when you could have simply repaired and call a professional.

Is the main line the issue?

If you know what to look for, your house will tell you if your main line is the problem.  Anytime your main line is involved, any water you run will cause your toilet to percolate or your toilet to back up into your tub or shower.  A main line stoppage will likely require special equipment that most homeowners don’t have.

Does a shower valve or tub need to be replaced?

Both a shower valve and tub replacement are bigger jobs than they seem.  They can be complex and end up costing you more time and money than you think.  The possibility for you to cause damage to your home or windup with a tub or shower that is inoperable warrant a call to a professional plumber.
