1. Have your furnace professionally cleaned and tuned-up for maximum efficiency.
  2. Make sure all your filters are clean.
  3. Ensure that the blower wheel is clean.
  4. Move all furniture, rugs, etc., away from all registers and vents.
  5. Close all registers and vents in unused rooms and close the doors. A rolled towel at the bottom of the door will block drafts.
  6. Install, program and use a programmable thermostat to prevent heating your home when you are gone.
  7. Stop tampering with your thermostat settings. Install a whole home humidifier. You'll feel warmer at a lower thermostat setting.
  8. If your furnace is more than 10 years old, contact us about an energy analysis to see what kind of savings you could be receiving with more efficient equipment.
  9. Stop heating garages and porches, but make sure they are winterized to prevent problems.
  10. Don't use a fireplace to heat your home. They pull more heat out of the home than they put back in.
  11. Make sure fireplace dampers are closed tightly when not in use.
  12. Install glass doors on your fireplace to stop heat from escaping up the chimney when it's not in use.
  13. Install flow restrictor heads on your showers and limit shower times.
  14. Repair all water leaks and dripping faucets ASAP.
  15. Run only full loads in your dishwasher, washing machine and dryer.
  16. Consider replacing your traditional hot water tank with an energy-efficient tankless water heater.
  17. Insulate all ductwork installed or running through unconditioned spaces (garages, attics, etc.).
  18. Seal all supply and return air ductwork with duct mastic sealant compound.
  19. Ensure gas-fired hot water heaters are flushed every four months.
  20. Install weather stripping around all doors and insulate where necessary.
